Ever needed to quickly convert a file – perhaps a Word doc into a PDF – and found yourself Googling for a free tool to get it done?
It feels harmless, doesn’t it?
A quick download, a fast conversion… job done.
But what if that innocent click was actually opening the door to ransomware or data theft?
The FBI’s Denver Field Office has issued a warning about free file converter tools being used to spread malware and harvest sensitive data
At face value, file converters seem simple. They take one file format and turn it into another. Maybe you’re sending a PowerPoint to a client and need it as a PDF. Or you want to merge a few images into one document.
These tools are often free. They work well. And that’s exactly what makes them risky.
Cyber criminals are using fake or compromised converters to hide malware. The tool might do exactly what it promises, but behind the scenes, it could also be installing harmful software on your system.
That includes malware, which may steal data, spy on your activity, or corrupt your files – and in the worst cases, ransomware, locking your documents and demanding payment.
These tools can also scan and steal sensitive information from your uploads – passwords, bank details, customer lists, invoices or HR data. This personal data scraping is exactly what the FBI warning highlights .
The real kicker? These converters often work as advertised – making the danger hard to spot.
If your team needs file conversions, rely on trusted software from reputable providers – not random one-off websites.
Education and awareness are your first line of defence. Take the time to review the tools your team is using and assess their safety.
