“Ask Copilot” is coming to your Taskbar (but only if you want it to)

Microsoft Is Adding AI Search to the Windows 11 Taskbar

The Windows search box has always been a bit limited. You type something, it shows you a list of files, apps, or settings that match, and you pick one. It works, but it’s not exactly clever.

That’s about to change.

Microsoft is testing a new feature called Ask Copilot, and it turns that same search box into something far more useful. Instead of just searching, it actually helps you get things done.

What Ask Copilot does differently

With regular Windows search, you need to know what you’re looking for. A file name, an app, a setting buried three menus deep.

Ask Copilot lets you describe what you want to do instead.

You could type “open the invoice template I used last week” or “how do I connect to the projector” or “split this PDF into separate pages”. Rather than showing you a list of results to sift through, Copilot can take action. It opens the file, adjusts the setting, or walks you through the steps.

It’s the same search box in the same place on your taskbar. It just understands what you’re asking.

Extra features alongside it

The updated taskbar also includes quick access icons for Copilot Vision, which can help you understand what’s on your screen, and voice commands if you’d rather talk than type.

These sit next to the search box and give you different ways to interact with Copilot depending on what suits you.

You don’t have to use it

If AI in your taskbar sounds like more than you need right now, that’s fine. Ask Copilot is completely opt-in.

You’ll only see it if you deliberately turn it on through Settings, under Personalisation, then Taskbar, then Ask Copilot. Everyone else keeps the standard search exactly as it is.

Microsoft has also confirmed this doesn’t give Copilot any new access to your files. It uses the same tools as regular Windows Search. Nothing is being scanned or monitored in the background.

Why this could be useful for your team

Small interruptions add up. Every time someone stops what they’re doing to hunt for a document, figure out a setting, or search the web for basic instructions, that’s focus lost.

A search tool that actually understands “find the spreadsheet Sarah sent last Tuesday” or “turn on do not disturb” saves those few minutes each time. Across a team, across a week, it adds up.

When it’s available

Ask Copilot is currently being tested in Windows 11 preview builds. A wider rollout is expected soon, though Microsoft hasn’t confirmed exact dates yet.

When it does arrive, you’ll have the choice to try it or ignore it entirely.
