What is Web Filtering

Does your business have Web filtering set up?

Web filtering is a security tool that controls which websites and online content can be accessed from your business devices and network. It blocks harmful, inappropriate or unproductive sites before anyone on your team can reach them.

Most small businesses do not think about web filtering until something goes wrong. By that point, a member of staff has already clicked on a malicious site, malware has installed itself quietly in the background, and the damage is done.

How web filtering works

Web filtering works by checking every website request against a database of known categories and flagged domains. If a site falls into a blocked category, such as known malware distribution, phishing pages, or adult content, the request is stopped before the page loads.

More advanced web filtering tools also analyse sites in real time, catching newly created malicious pages that have not yet been added to existing blocklists.

Most solutions operate at the DNS level, meaning the filtering happens before any content is even downloaded to the device. This makes it one of the most efficient ways to block threats early in the chain.

What web filtering blocks

The most important category is malicious sites. This includes known phishing pages, sites that distribute malware, and domains used by criminals to steal credentials or install ransomware. Blocking access to these sites removes one of the most common entry points for cyber attacks.

Web filtering can also block inappropriate content, which matters for businesses that need to demonstrate a safe and professional working environment.

Productivity categories are also commonly managed through web filtering. Social media, streaming platforms, gambling sites and other time-consuming destinations can be restricted during working hours, with access opened up at other times if appropriate.

It follows your team wherever they work

One of the most important features of modern web filtering is that it is not limited to your office network. The policy follows the device, which means staff working from home, on client sites, or in a coffee shop are covered by the same rules as they would be in the office.

This matters because home networks are significantly less secure than business networks. A member of staff accessing company data over an unprotected home broadband connection is a genuine risk, and web filtering addresses part of that problem.

It is straightforward to manage

Web filtering does not require technical expertise to operate on a day to day basis. Sites and categories can be blocked or allowed in a few clicks through a management dashboard. You can also see reporting on what is being accessed across your network, which gives you visibility you would not otherwise have.

For most SMEs, the setup is handled by your IT provider and then runs quietly in the background without needing regular attention.

Why it matters alongside other security tools

Web filtering works best as part of a layered approach to security. It sits alongside email filtering, which catches phishing attempts before they reach the inbox, and endpoint detection and response, which monitors devices for suspicious behaviour in real time.

No single tool eliminates cyber risk entirely. But web filtering removes a significant number of threats before they ever reach your staff, which reduces the overall attack surface considerably.
