What Is Cyber Essentials and How Does Your Business Get Certified?

What is Cyber Essentials and why does your business need it?

Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification scheme that helps businesses protect themselves against the most common cyber attacks.

It sets out five basic security controls that, when properly implemented, significantly reduce the risk of a successful attack.

We are Cyber Essentials certified ourselves, so when we help our clients through the process, we are drawing on direct experience of exactly what is involved. It is something we genuinely believe in, not just a service we offer.

What Cyber Essentials covers

The certification is built around five core controls.

Firewalls.

A properly configured firewall controls what traffic is allowed in and out of your network. Without one, your systems are exposed to the internet with no filter between them and potential attackers.

Secure configuration.

Devices and software should be set up securely from the start, with default passwords changed, unnecessary features disabled, and settings reviewed. Many attacks exploit poorly configured systems rather than sophisticated vulnerabilities.

User access control.

Staff should only have access to the systems and data they actually need to do their job. If an account is compromised, limiting access limits the damage.

Malware protection.

Anti-malware software should be in place on all devices to detect and block malicious software before it can cause harm.

Patch management.

Software updates exist for a reason. Keeping operating systems and applications up to date closes known vulnerabilities that attackers actively look to exploit.

Why Cyber Essentials matters for your business

The most straightforward reason is security. The five controls covered by Cyber Essentials address the attack methods used in the majority of cyber incidents affecting UK businesses. Getting certified means those controls have been assessed and verified, not just assumed to be in place.

Beyond security, certification sends a clear signal to clients, suppliers and partners that your business takes cyber security seriously. For many businesses, that reassurance matters when choosing who to work with.

There is also a commercial argument. A growing number of larger organisations and public sector bodies now require their suppliers to hold Cyber Essentials before they will engage with them. Without it, you may find yourself locked out of contracts you would otherwise be well placed to win.

Cyber Essentials Plus

There is also a higher level called Cyber Essentials Plus. Rather than a self-assessment questionnaire, Plus involves a hands-on technical assessment carried out by an accredited assessor. It provides a higher level of assurance and is increasingly required for businesses working with government contracts or handling sensitive data.

How we help businesses get certified

We have been through the Cyber Essentials process ourselves and we help businesses across the North East do the same. That means working through the five control areas with you, identifying anything that needs addressing before the assessment, and making sure everything is in order before you submit.

Most businesses find the process more straightforward than they expected, particularly with the right support. We handle the technical side and guide you through the paperwork so it does not become a distraction from running your business.

Cyber Essentials is just one part of our wider security services but we genuinely enjoy helping North East businesses get certified. Partly because it makes them more secure, and partly because we know the difference it can make commercially when a potential client or contract asks whether you hold it.

What to do next

If your business does not hold Cyber Essentials certification, or if you are not sure whether your current setup would pass, we are happy to have a conversation about where you stand.
