Warning: Fake Antivirus Websites Could Put Your Business at Risk

How Fake Antivirus Sites Trick Businesses into Downloading Malware

When you’re trying to protect your business, downloading antivirus software feels like a safe step. But what if the very site you download it from is the threat?

That’s exactly what cyber criminals are doing — setting up fake websites that look almost identical to trusted antivirus providers. One recent case saw attackers create a convincing copy of a well-known cyber security company’s site, complete with the same layout, branding, and “Download” button.

But instead of installing protection, that button delivered something far more dangerous.

How Fake Antivirus Sites Work

The bogus site didn’t provide antivirus software at all. Instead, it installed a file called StoreInstaller.exe, which contained VenomRAT (Remote Access Trojan). This tactic of using fake sites to deliver malware is a well-documented threat, as highlighted by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

A Remote Access Trojan allows attackers to take complete control of your computer without you knowing. Once installed, it can:

  • Steal usernames and passwords
  • Record keystrokes
  • Access webcams and microphones
  • Install additional malware
  • Target cryptocurrency wallets or bank accounts

In this particular attack, the criminals’ goal was to steal login details and cryptocurrency information. Once stolen, that data could be sold on criminal marketplaces or used directly for fraud.

Why This Matters for Businesses

This isn’t just about antivirus tools. Criminals also create fake websites impersonating banks, IT providers, and other trusted companies. These are often hosted on reputable platforms like Amazon, making them look even more legitimate.

For a business, the risks are serious:

  • The financial impact of these crimes is staggering, with businesses reporting billions of pounds in losses to Action Fraud.
  • We’ve seen small businesses in particular caught out by scams like this, often because staff are busy and assume a website “looks right”

How to Stay Safe

The good news is that there are simple steps to reduce your risk:

  • Check website addresses carefully before downloading software.
  • Never click links in emails or messages unless you’re certain they’re genuine.
  • Only download security tools directly from official websites.
