Everything You Need to Know About the PSTN Switch Off

The UK’s Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is being permanently switched off in January 2027, marking the end of traditional analogue phone lines. This change will impact homes and businesses across the country — and it’s important to be prepared.

What Is the PSTN Switch Off?

The PSTN has powered phone lines in the UK for decades, but it’s no longer fit for purpose in the digital age. It can’t support the speed, reliability, or flexibility that modern communication requires. So Openreach is retiring the old copper-based system and replacing it with fully digital services that run over the internet.
In simple terms, everything that currently uses a traditional phone line will need to move to a digital alternative.

When Is the PSTN Switch Off Happening?

The original PSTN switch off date was set for December 2025, but this has since been extended.

Openreach has now confirmed that the final withdrawal of PSTN services will take place by January 2027. The delay allows more time for the safe migration of vulnerable customers and businesses using critical services like alarms and emergency systems.

That said, the process is already well underway:

• Since September 2023, new PSTN lines can no longer be ordered

• Many areas are under a “stop sell” status, meaning no new PSTN-based services can be added or changed

• Providers are actively transitioning customers ahead of the 2027 cut-off

So while the absolute deadline is now 2027, businesses and homeowners are strongly encouraged to switch well before then to avoid disruption.

What Services Will Be Affected?

The switch-off doesn’t just affect landline phones. Any technology that relies on PSTN will be impacted, including:

• Alarm systems and emergency call lines
• Fax machines
• Door entry systems
• Payment terminals (EPOS)
• CCTV and lift emergency lines

It may also affect your broadband connection if it still runs over the copper network.

What Do You Need to Do?

1. Move to a Digital Phone System (VoIP)
